Mark Lydon and Tactical Urbanism Roundtable
June 4, Community Hall at the Wing Luke Museum, Seattle
Lengthy permitting processes, declining public investment, and stretched municipal budgets – these are the issues that have helped spark the tactical urbanism movement which turns ordinary citizens into DIY urban planners. Low-cost, short-term interventions – pop-up parks in parking spaces or abandoned lots, pavement removal to create community green spaces, and installation of potted plants to slow traffic and make residential streets safer – are happening in cities all over the world. Join Island Press Author Mike Lydon to discuss tactical urbanism as a strategy to build social capital, provide community-driven solutions to urban challenges, and help local governments be more attuned and responsive to the needs of their citizens. Please RSVP for this event as soon as possible to Sam.Haapaniemi@kingcounty.gov

About Contractor Accreditation with Salmon-Safe
Salmon-Safe accreditation for construction companies is engaging the Northwest's leading contractors in consistently applying best construction site management practices with the goal of achieving zero sediment runoff across their entire operation. The Salmon-Safe Contractor accreditation is a ground breaking nod to excellence in providing best management for mid and large scale construction companies. This is the nation's first accreditation program to recognize construction professionals' excellence in water quality protection practices and it will serve as a vehicle for enhanced accountability in environmental compliance for construction site management in West Coast urban watersheds. The accreditation program recognizes construction companies who commit to implementing pollutant control and runoff protection measures everywhere they work, even if the sites they are constructing will not necessarily be eligible for Salmon-Safe certification. Accredited companies further commit to ensuring that Salmon-Safe practices are carried out by all subcontractors and their employees.
Since 2009, Salmon-Safe has been a community partner with Built Green in developing the Communities Checklist, participating in the Built Green Conference as well as certifying zHome. More recently Salmon-Safe worked with Polygon Homes to provide a dual certification process for their Issaquah Terrace project which will achieve Built Green 3-Star as well as Salmon-Safe statuses.
Salmon-Safe works with Stewardship Partners to implement the program in Puget Sound. They currently have grant funding to offset costs for Built Green Members seeking accreditation! If you'd like to know more contact Ellen Southard at 206.5798656 or email es@stewardshippartners.org.

Spring Fun!
Last month, Built Green had a great time co-sponsoring Seattle Greendrinks with Green Canopy and special guest the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, as well as co–hosting a spring party with the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild. Both events were a great success. Thanks so much to everyone who came, and a special thanks to everyone who came together and donated time, money, or services to ensuring everyone would have a great time! We look forward to more events like this.

Important Reminder: Certifications Under Old Single-Family Checklist Due Soon
On July 18, 2014, Built Green made the transition to the new statewide Single-Family/Townhome New Construction Certification Checklist. All projects enrolled prior to this date have the option of certifying under the old Single-Family/Townhome New Construction checklist here.
Under this enrollment, projects have until July 18, 2015 to be completed if they are being certified under the old checklist. If the final certification documents are not submitted by July 18th, 2015, the project will be required to use the new statewide Single-Family/Townhome Checklist. Please contact Built Green if you have any questions about this transition.
