Built Green Seattle

A full-day workshop on the Seattle Built Green Design Competition was well attended on October 23 at the Mountaineers Club in Seattle. Find out how you can become involved at www.seattle.gov/dclu/sustainability.

Events

Membership Meeting of Built Green - The first ever meeting of our member companies will be held on Thursday, Nov 6, at the MBA Banquet Room from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. While this is primarily a social and informational event to get us all together, we will also request your feedback on the program in the form of a short survey. Beverages and hors d'ouvres provided.

Gingerbread in Green? Just before Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season, visions of Built Green in gingerbread can be found at the Sheraton in downtown Seattle. The 11th Annual Gingerbread Village sparkles for the holidays with eight oversized gingerbread houses created by local architects, the Built Green program and the talented culinary staff of the Sheraton. The display benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and will be on display at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers from Nov. 24 to Dec. 26, hors d'oeuvres provided. Project volunteers are welcome to help decorate the house. For more information on the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, click here.

Green Roadways

Does Green Design Work on Roadways? The short answer is "yes." Two years of monitoring show that a Street Edge Alternatives (SEA) Street in Seattle has reduced the total volume of stormwater leaving the street by 98 percent for a two-year storm event. The pilot SEA Street is designed to provide drainage that more closely mimics the natural landscape prior to development than traditional piped systems. Impervious surfaces were reduced to 11 percent less than a traditional street, providing surface detention in swales, and adding more than 100 evergreen trees and 1,100 shrubs. Many credits in the Built Green Communities Checklist award points for reducing and treating stormwater with such methods.

From the Director

Since the inception of the Built Green™ program, funding and substantial contributions of time have been provided by the Program Partners, King County, Snohomish County and Fannie Mae for development of the program. Other support was supplied by the City of Seattle, The Puget Sound Water Quality Authority, and the program provider, the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties. Current major sponsors include Puget Sound Energy, Whirlpool, Port Blakely Communities and Security Properties.

As the Built Green™ program moves from development to maintenance, its funding sources will necessarily evolve. The MBA continues to provide a basic budget and staff time, and a small amount of funding comes from program participants’ fees. As with the experience of other green building programs around the nation, however, additional funding must be sought to grow and sustain an effective program. This funding pays for consumer outreach, builder education, program evaluation and improvements and reprinting or purchase of program supplies. I encourage you to consider sponsoring our important effort to preserve or improve various aspects of our community.

Robin Rogers, Program Director

Eco-Mixer

More than 75 green building industry representatives gathered at the Environmental Home Center (EHC) in Seattle for a social "mixer" that also featured brief presentations. Sponsored by Built Green and the EHC, the event was designed to provide an occasion for members of Built Green, the Northwest Ecobuilding Guild and others interested in green home building to casually discuss the current climate for sustainable building in the Puget Sound area. The showroom of EHC provided a perfect venue as attendees could see examples of high-quality green products including non-toxic paint, natural carpets, sustainable wood products, energy-efficient insulation and people-friendly cleaning supplies. Café Pacific served an excellent menu of organic hors d’oeuvres that featured a “garden” of vegetables planted among wheat grass (pictured).

Kent Developers

Good News for Kent Developers! Cluster development provides opportunities to preserve open space for community greens and recreation, natural resources, environmentally critical areas and historic preservation, plus more efficient infrastructure. So it's good news for Built Green developers in Kent as the Kent City Council voted unanimously to pass the Cluster Housing Zone Code Amendment Ordinance that provides for cluster subdivisions in all single family residential zoning districts. As defined by the Kent Zoning Code, clustering or cluster subdivision "means a development or division of land in which residential lots are reduced in size and concentrated in specified portion(s) of the original lot, tract, or parcel." The Built Green Communities program (Checklist) offers credit to developers for related actions such as designing for maximum population density allowable under GMA, clustering homes on a site, planning for variable lot sizes, preserving open spaces and providing pockets parks within the buildable area. See Kent Building Codes.

Seattle Home Show

Members of Built Green volunteered to staff the Built Green Home Show booth in October.

Built Green's Home Show booth featured a presentation area with seating for 14, with a continuously playing slide show describing the Built Green program.

Jorve Roofing came forward to sponsor our large booth space on the north end of the exhibition floor. Skyline Displays of Seattle stepped up to donate use of a large professional, display structure. The Home Show once again promoted the Built Green program through newspaper articles, signs, television ads, radio and its website.

Member companies sponsored large graphic panels as shown in the photo to show their support of the program, including Stafford Homes, Quadrant Homes, O'Brien & Company, King County, Countrywide Home Loans, Legacy Roofing, Greenworks Realty, Thomas Jacobson Construction, Boise HomePlate Siding, GGLO Architects, Shirey Contracting and Penates Design.

We also had about 30 different members staffing the booth, representing King County, City of Seattle, Snohomish County, Countywide Home Loans, Penates Design, EnerGreen, Celilo Media Group, the Construction Consultants, Environmental Plastic Lumber, MBA, the Northwest Ecobuilding Guild, Thomas Jacobson Construction, GGLO Architects, GreenWorks Realty, Tenhulzen Remodeling, LLK Interior Design and Legacy Roofing.

New Certifications

Single Family - Habitat for Humanity recently certified a Built Green home on Miller Street in Olympia -- with more than 300 points! Built Green members Diane Glenn of the Construction Consultants, Patti Southard of the Environmental Home Center and Wes Just of Boise Homeplate Siding contributed to the project.

Built Green Idea Home

The MBA is presenting a Built Green demonstration project that will show to the general public what it means to be Built Green. With Puget Sound Energy as the title sponsor, the Built Green Idea Home is gaining a lot of interest in the industry and with the media. Designed by Mithun Architects and built by Bennett Homes in Issaquah Highlands, other sponsors have come forward to support its development, such as Countrywide Home Loans, Windermere, the Seattle Times, the City of Issaquah, and Port Blakely Communities, developers of Issaquah Highlands. MBA member companies are collaborating to construct this home that features a passive solar design, daylighting, sustainable landscaping, recycled and renewable materials, a vegetated roof deck and many other examples of sustainable building.

For sponsorship opportunities, please contact Bruce Woodstrom at 206.264.7707 x203 or bruce@fusionpartners.net. An on-site course about the home's green features will be offered to industry professionals in the spring through MBA University. The Idea Home will be open to the public in Spring 2004. The photograph shows the Idea Home last week.

Rebates

Photovoltaics (PVs) capture and convert the sun's renewable, pollution-free energy into electricity, and are usually mounted on rooftops. Despite the frequent cloud cover in the Pacific Northwest, PVs are a viable, year-round energy source. A one-kilowatt capacity PV system can save about $95 to $125 of electricity costs per year based on Puget Sound Energy’s (PSE) current residential rates. The cost of an average one-kilowatt capacity PV system starts at about $7,000. PSE offers rebates of up to $600 per kilowatt for solar PV systems. To find out more, please call PSE 1.800.562.1482.
