Forest Stewardship Council Leader Tours King County Timberlands, Meets Forest Owners
Today, when a construction company builds a home in King County using lumber from a sustainably managed forest, there's a good chance that forest is several thousand miles away.
King County is working with the world's leading sustainable forestry organization so that in the future, a good portion of the construction industry's demand for "green" building materials comes from local timberlands.
Michael Washburn, CEO of the Forest Stewardship Council, recently met with King County representatives to discuss plans for developing a certification program for landowners with timber stands.
King County Executive Ron Sims said Washburn's visit is significant because it marked the first time the head of the Forest Stewardship Council had met with small timberland owners.
Sims also noted that King County was working toward certification for its working forest properties, which total more than 3,000 acres. King County is one of the first jurisdictions in the Northwest region to consider certification.
"It makes no sense that a construction company here in King County should have to order sustainably produced lumber from the East Coast," he said. "We need to get timberlands within King County certified as sustainable forests so that some of that demand for green building materials is fulfilled right here."
King County's Forestry Program focuses on the retention of forest land for its environmental, social, and economic benefits. The program provides education, technical assistance, and economic incentives aimed at retaining the forest resources of King County.
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit forest certifier that promotes responsible forest management across the globe, and its trademark provides international recognition to organizations that support responsible forest management.
Letter from the Director |
Built Green is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Sustainable Group to aid us in our administrative needs by providing 100% recycled binders and folders to the program. New Built Green members can expect to find their program handbooks in these stylish ecologically friendly binders rather than in traditional vinyl binders. Rebinder's cover is completely removable, replaceable and recyclable, and the Ballard based company is local to boot.
Speaking of news, Built Green is also proud to announce that we have contracted our keynote speaker for the 2007 Built Green Conference, and it's already time to start getting excited for the event. Hunter Lovins is the President and co-founder of Natural Capitalism Inc., a Boulder-based company that helps business, governments, academic institutions, and international communities become simultaneously more profitable and environmentally/ socially sustainable. Lovins was also a co-author of the hit book Natural Capitalism which first introduced the concept of the "triple bottom line", a term that refers to the business goals of profitability, environmental awareness, and social responsibility and has become an inextricable part of the vernacular of green business. Built Green is very excited to have the opportunity to bring her to the pacific northwest.
