Featured Project
View the case study here.

This month's featured project is a 49 unit, affordable multi-family housing development in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Designed by SMR Architects, the redevelopment project included the restoration of a historic house built in 1907, which contains four of the units. The 3-Star project was the 2006 Built Green Hammer Award winner in the multi-family over 5-story category.

The many green features include:

Site and Water Protection

  • Installation of erosion control devices during construction
  • Stabilization of slopes with organic compost
  • Use of slow release organic fertilizers to establish vegetation
  • Amendment of soils to a depth of eight to ten inches
  • Redevelopment of existing infill site
  • Location convenient to public transportation
Energy-Efficiency
  • Use of energy-efficient traction elevator rather than conventional hydraulic elevator
  • Reduced thermal bridging through use of rigid insulation over the exterior of stem walls
  • Further reduced thermal bridging by placing rigid insulation above slab rather than below
  • Located heating and cooling equipment and distribution system inside the heated space
  • Used a comprehensive approach to high-quality lighting design including placement of fluorescent bulbs in hallways
  • Installation of a ductless heating system
Material Use
  • Enrolled project in King County's Construction Works program
  • Focused heavily on recycling jobsite waste including yard waste, metal, wood, drywall and asphalt roofing.
  • Used advanced or two-by-six framing
  • Use of recycled content carpet
  • Use of rapidly renewable materials for flooring, such as linoleum, cork and bamboo
  • Acoustical ceiling tiles contain recycled waste
  • Used a siding product with 50 year warranty
Indoor Air Quality
  • Involved sub-contractors in implementing a healthy jobsite plan
  • Ventilation after the application of each new finish
  • Designed for cross ventilation by providing operable windows
  • Installation of exhaust fans vented to the outside
  • Use of Greenguard certified products such as insulation
  • Installed cabinets made with formaldehyde free projects and low toxic finish
  • Required builders to certify at a 3-Star level of above on the Built Green Checklist

Biodiesel Basics

For those interested in learning how to make biodiesel from used restaurant oil. You will learn the chemistry and tricks of making quality biodiesel by making small batches and experimenting with different vegetable oils, catalysts, and pH indicators. We will also cover washing, quality control, sources of supplies and equipment, methanol recovery, disposal of wastes and reactor design, with an emphasis on the "Appleseed" reactor made from an electric water heater - which will be demonstrated in class!

Other topics to be covered will include: myths and facts about biodiesel; cold weather issues; local availability; and what's going on locally and nationally with the movement. After the class, students will be invited to visit a small-scale home biodiesel processor.

King County Announces the Small Works Roster for Salvage, Deconstruction, and Structure Relocation!

Being placed on the county Small Works Roster will allow your company to receive invitations to take part in a brief bid process for deconstruction, salvage and structure relocation projects.

King County Procurement is accepting applications for its Small Works Roster. Download application here.
