Caladonia Bay Builders and Marshall Rose Architect

This month's featured home is a 5-Star single family home in North Seattle designed by Marshall Rose, Architect and built by Caladonia Bay Builders. The home started with a careful deconstruction of the existing home on the property. The site plan included a comprehensive infiltration strategy including rain gardens and a green roof on the garage. The design of the building incorporated a strong energy strategy complemented by a 3.5 KW solar photovoltaic array, a solar hot water system and hydronic heating powered by a 93 to 95 percent efficient boiler.

Caladonia Bay Builders re-milled the framing from the previous home on the site into trim for the new home, and used FSC-certified wood for the new wood in the home. To improve indoor air quality, radiant heating was used throughout the home, no carpet was used and the garage was detached from the home. Finally, at less than 1,700 square feet, the home is much smaller than the King County average for single family homes.

2007- A Year in Review
The green building movement experienced unprecedented growth in 2007, and the dramatic growth of the Built Green program reflected that rapidly rising interest in green building. Our membership grew 40% to 585 members, and 2,260 homes certified in 2007 brought our two-county total to 12,260 certified properties since 2000. Website traffic was up 50% over 2006 and 100% over 2005, and our program budget grew correspondingly allowing us to increase public awareness of the program and better service our members. This growth, along with the outstanding participation and projects of our members, resulted in Built Green being awarded the 2007 Green Building Program of the Year award by the National Association of Home Builders.

Built Green also introduced a number of new initiatives and projects in 2007. The Built Green Incentive, funded by King County Department of Natural Resources and Seattle Public Utilities, gave cash incentives between $2,500 and $15,000 to builders and developers for stepping up to the 4-Star and 5-Star levels of Built Green. 2007 also saw Built Green launch a certification program for real estate sales and marketing professionals at North Seattle Community College, the greening of the Seattle Street of Dreams highlighted Built Green for custom and luxury projects, and the Highpoint and Greenbridge communities showcased Built Green for subsidized and affordable projects.

Finally, in what may prove to be the biggest catalyst for shifting the market toward green building, Built Green was included in a new "environmental certification" category on the Northwest Multiple Listings Service form for the listing of new properties.

2007 was a very successful year for Built Green. We enter 2008 with hopes to continue our growth, improve the initiatives we introduced in 2007 while continuing to introduce new initiatives to expand awareness of green building, and further transition the mainstream building market toward sustainability.

Save the date for our annual Built Green Conference Thursday and Friday, March 13 and 14, 2008 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, WA. We are pleased to announce Van Jones and Andrew Winston as our keynote speakers.

Andrew Winston, a national leader in green business development and co-author of the highly acclaimed book, "Green to Gold," will headline March 14. Winston is founder of Winston Eco-Strategies and works with leading companies to use environmental thinking to drive growth. He has consulted with start-ups and Fortune 500 companies such as Bank of America, Reuters, Cisco, and IKEA. His book, "Green to Gold," highlights what works – and what doesn't – when companies go "green." Winston is a nationally recognized expert on green business, and has written for or appeared in Time, Newsweek, Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Forbes, The New York Times, The Washington Post, ABC News, National Public Radio and CNBC.

Van Jones will be the featured keynote speaker on March 13 and will address issues of affordability in Green Building and the development of "green collar jobs." Jones is a civil rights and human rights advocate, and founder of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, CA. Over the past five years, Jones has emerged as a national environmental leader, focusing on social equity and "green collar jobs." In 2005, Jones produced the "Social Equity Track" for the United Nations' World Environment Day celebration.

In addition to the keynote speakers, the conference will also contain: two days of education focusing on high-performance building techniques, green marketing, affordability and green architecture; a green expo featuring over 125 booths; book signings; and much more!

Introduction to Built Green®
This seminar provides an introduction to the Built Green program from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12 at MBA Housing Center, 335 116th Ave. SE in Bellevue. Learn how to certify a project and use the checklist, how to join, how the program works and other resources. The seminar presents examples of projects and covers how to fill out the Built Green checklist. This orientation has a cost of $30 and is required in order to certify homes as Built Green.
