Sunshine
Construction Company of Seattle
was asked by a Seattle couple to build a very environmentally
friendly home that was also affordable to them. The
result is this ultra-green, urban Built Green home,
dubbed "The Sensible House." It meets all their objectives
plus many more, and achieves the highest level of
green home certification at the new 5-Star levels.
The home includes an energy-efficient shell made
of structural insulated panels on the roof, with
9-inch double-framed R-33 walls insulated with cellulose.
Windows are triple-glazed to retain heat but let
in sunlight for passive solar heating and daylighting.
Domestic
hot water is heated by the sun with a rooftop solar
collector, and a 7,000-gallon cistern collects
rainwater from the roof to use for irrigation.
Indoor air quality is protected by using a variety
of low-toxic
products on interiors such as paints, cabinetry
and floor varnishes. Moisture and mold growth are
inhibited
by moisture barriers such as rain shields and sill
pans, and a HEPA filter on the heat recovery ventilation
system helps keep the air clean. Sustainably-harvested
lumber and salvaged wood was used throughout the
house for flooring, cabinets, trim, framing and
stairs. Recycled flyash was added to the concrete
slab, and
50-year Hardiplank siding was installed. Pervious
paving in the driveway allows rainwater to soak
into the ground.

FlexCar...What
is it? |
Instead
of owning and managing a fleet of vehicles or continually
processing individual trip reimbursements, a business
can opt to join Flexcar. Flexcar is a car-sharing
service that provides an alternative to car ownership.
Member companies pay a $25 annual fee, and then
adopt an hourly or monthly rate plan where employees
can reserve and drive vehicles as needed. In close
partnership with King County Metro Transit, the
Seattle regional office of Flexcar operates a fleet
of more than 100 vehicles in more than a dozen
neighborhoods in Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond,
West Seattle and Kitsap County.
Flexcar's
central reservation system manages the vehicles
and tracks use, including employee/department use
and hours and miles driven. Flexcar covers the
cost of the vehicle, parking, insurance, gas and
maintenance. There are three types of programs
for businesses: shared car, semi-exclusive and
exclusive use. Visit the website for
further information.

your houses are sealed properly and effectively. You

Implement -
The city of Seattle launched a new web-based tool

green building called Implement. While it
focuses primarily on commercial applications and
case studies, there are many useful links to myriad
websites that provide information on indoor air quality,
energy, passive solar, productivity, materials and
lighting.
