Green Roof Tour

Green Roof Tour Draws a Crowd
The Green Roof Tour held recently by the Northwest Ecobuilding Guild was a huge success! Built Green Executive Committee member Jon Alexander of Sunshine Construction in Seattle provided one of the tours’ stops at a garage/workshop that he retrofitted with a green roof. Says Alexander, “It was quite an amazing experience having 120 people looking at my roof over a couple-hour period. It was a lot of fun and was great to see the tour more successful then I could have imagined it to be.” In addition to the 120 people that viewed Alexander’s roof, 25 other people toured roofs in the south end of the county.

Resources

Renewable Energy Analysis Software
Our neighbors to the north have created a preliminary feasibility analysis software to evaluate Renewable Energy Technology (RET) projects quickly and effectively, and it runs on readily-available Microsoft Excel. Users are able to prepare a preliminary evaluation of the annual energy production, costs, and financial viability of RET projects anywhere in the world. The software can be used to evaluate the energy production, life-cycle costs and greenhouse gas emission reductions for various types of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies compared to conventional energy projects. In addition to the software, the tool includes product, cost and international weather databases; an online manual; a case study based college/university-level training course and electronic textbook. The program includes wind energy, small hydro, photovoltaics, biomass, solar and ground-source heat pumps, among others. Download software for free.

From the Director

Idea Home Survey
The numbers are in! On opening day of the Puget Sound Energy Built Green Idea Home, Analytical One and Fusion Partners surveyed almost 200 visitors for their impressions of green homes. Here are a few of the results in a nutshell:

- $20,000 premium NOT a barrier in this price range ($560,000)

- Most important features to visitors:

1. Controlled ventilation for clean air, followed by

2. Use of renewable/recycled materials

3. Clean water & water conservation

4. Low-emitting materials

5. Energy efficiency

6. Built Green certification

- The newspaper insert in The Seattle Times motivated most to visit.

It is not insignificant that Built Green certification is Number Six: while consumers want and expect higher indoor air quality, energy efficiency, water conservation and the wise use of resources, they also want to be assured that they’re getting it. The builder’s, remodeler’s, developer’s or designer’s signature on the Built Green project checklist provides that extra reassurance.

So, if you’re not already part of the program, I hope you will consider joining us in our quest to create homes that exceed building codes and provide homeowners with years of healthy, quality living, while protecting the precious Northwest environment. Join Built Green forms are posted on our website homepage.

July 4th Memorial

MBA Supports July 4th and War Memorial at Marymoor Park, Redmond

MBA has partnered with King County Parks, KVI Radio and other sponsors to help celebrate our national heritage on July 4th at Marymoor Park in Redmond. This year’s event will deliver the American Veterans Traveling Tribute, including a four-fifths-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. There are veterans all over the country who can’t reach the Wall in Washington, D.C., and the MBA is proud to support bringing this wall to them and our community to pay homage to those who served our country. The memorial will open in Marymoor Park by 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, with opening ceremonies on Friday, July 2. The park and memorial will be open 24 hours a day until the exhibit leaves Sunday, July 4, with grief counselors on-hand at all times. The wall is 378 feet long and 8 feet high at its apex. It is fully engraved, and visitors will be able to make etchings of the names.

  • A few extra supplies are needed for the traveling Vietnam War Memorial:
  • 16-foot-tall flag pole
  • Plants and shrubs to place around the memorial
  • Eight to 12 volunteers on Thursday, July 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to install the wall

If your company can help, please contact Alyson Soma of KVI via at 206.404.4000.

Ramping Up

One of Built Green's member companies stepped up to help a US veteran , Tommy Brown, during Rampathon, MBA's annual ramp-building spree for people in need of better access. While more 300 MBA members and friends volunteered labor, materials and monetary contributions to participate in Rampathon, Westhill Inc. went a step further. In addition to building a ramp, Westhill's subcontractors performed electrical, plumbing and flooring repairs along with door and flooring replacements. Thanks for your commitment to helping our community, and for going above and beyond, Westhill!

NW Energy Star

Northwest Energy Star Program Launched
Energy Star Homes Northwest, has introduced a special Builder Option Package for the Northwest. The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) typical efficiency requirement for Energy Star Homes is 30 percent better than the IECC model energy code, but homes built to code in Oregon and Washington are already roughly that efficient. The Built Green program offers credit for certifying to Energy Star, and for using Energy Star products such as windows, furnaces, lighting, appliances, improved insulation and tightly sealed ducts. Built Green, Puget Sound Energy and the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance are creating a special Built Green checklist that will highlight all credits that lead to Energy Star; a rough draft is available now by contacting Robin Rogers. Two Built Green members have been chosen as verifiers for Northwest Energy Star: Diane Glenn of The Construction Consultants, and Dan Wildenhaus of Atmosphere. If you have questions about Energy Star Northwest, please contact the lead builder representative for the Puget Sound region, Tom Balderston at 206.715.6865.

A special Learn at Lunch on Energy Star Northwest will be held Friday, June 18 at the MBA.

Metro Transit Rolls out Hybrid Buses
King County Metro Transit has introduced the first of two dozen hybrid buses that will begin carrying passengers on Friday, June 5. A total of 235 hybrids have been purchased to replace aging buses now operating on routes using the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel.

These new replacements are expected to reduce tunnel bus fuel consumption by 750,000 gallons a year, and save approximately $3.5 million annually in fuel and maintenance costs. The hybrid buses operate on both Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) and electricity that is generated within the vehicle and stored in batteries on the roof. The design eliminates the need for overhead wires inside the "tunnel" in downtown Seattle, which will facilitate the tunnel retrofit to carry both buses and light rail. All will be on the road by the end of the year – 213 will be deployed by Metro and 22 by Sound Transit.

ArchiTech Residential magazine features two stories about our program in the Spring 2004 issue: one on the PSE Built Green Idea Home and green materials, and one on Crofton Springs, the planned community in Issaquah Highlands that combines the latest technology-enabled amenities with old-fashioned community-building features.

Amphibian Houses - If we can't beat global warming, join it? In anticipation of flooding due to global warming, the low-lying Netherlands is building homes on solid ground, but they also are designed to float on floodwater. Each house is made of lightweight wood, and the concrete base is hollow, giving it ship-like buoyancy. With no foundations anchored in the earth, the structure rests on the ground and is fastened to 15-foot-long mooring posts with sliding rings, allowing it to float upward should the river flood. All the electrical cables, water and sewage flow through flexible pipes inside the mooring piles.

Scientists Request Addition of Species to Endangered Species List - Five species of wildlife have been requested to be removed from a “waiting list” of endangered species, including the Oregon spotted frog, the basalt daisy, northern wormwood, Umtanum desert-buckwheat and white bluffs bladderpod, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. A coalition of prominent scientists, artists and environmentalists filed 1,000 pages of legal documents with the federal government, requesting that it cease delaying Endangered Species Act protection for 225 of the nation’s most imperiled plants and animals, almost half of which are in Hawaii. Washington is home to a total of 3,055 identified species of plants and animals, including 41 species listed as threatened and endangered. This ranks Washington 19th out of 50 for number of species and 16th for number of listed species.

Trucks and SUVs Go Hybrid - A new GM hybrid pickup truck can power tools at a construction site or run appliances at a campground with its pair of 110-volt electrical outlets and powerful V-8 engine. And it gets 10 to 15 percent better fuel economy thanks to hybrid propulsion technology. Not to be outdone in the quest for reducing gas consumption and emissions, a new Ford hybrid SUV unites gas and electric power in one fuel system to deliver over 35 miles per gallon in city driving and 400 to 500 miles on a single tank of gas. The hybrid system meets the strictest AT-PZEV emissions standards, making it an LEV (Low Emissions Vehicle) SUV. According to GM’s Tom Stephens, "We believe hybrids are going to make the most sense in higher fuel consumption vehicles, and that includes pickup trucks."
