The newest Built Green 4-Star certified home was built on a city infill lot in Seattle by Greenleaf Construction. This home features a vegetated roof that helps reduce stormwater impacts to the local sewer systems, and will be very low maintenance for the homeowner. The builder incorporated many salvaged elements into the home such as a vintage stairway balustrade and reclaimed doors. A third party verifier helped ensure that the builder followed the Built Green checklist.
The many green features include:
Site and Water Protection
- building on infill lot takes advantage of existing infrastructure and reduces development of virgin sites
- pervious materials cover at least one-third of hard surfaces for better stormwater management
- landclearing wood and stumps were ground for reuse
- temporary erosion control measures help prevent soil from washing away
- jobsite housekeeping was strictly maintained during construction
- a front porch with a walk-off area helps prevent contamination indoors
- landscaped beds mulched and amended for better moisture retention
- alternative to garbage disposal to facilitate composting
- green or vegetated roof that does not require irrigation
Using Energy Wisely
- documented envelope improvements that show a 12 percent improvement in heat loss as compared against the state energy code baseline house
- advanced wall framing with added insulated
- windows are oriented to take advantage of solar heat, but south facing overhangs on the windows provide shading when needed
- insulated headers, corners and intersection of interior/exterior walls
- heat recovery ventilator uses waste heat that reduces energy required to heat cold outdoor air
- solar powered outdoor lighting
- tankless hot water system
- Energy Star heating/cooling equipment, refrigerator, dishwasher and horizontal axis washer
