Have you ever seen a historic Craftsman or Victorian home being moved along a city street, or being towed on a barge from one location to another? House moving is often featured on the news as a unique spectacle when done today. However, historically speaking, house moving has been surprisingly common for as long as humans have been building homes; especially with historic houses, lighthouses, and other buildings or structures in the pathway of 'progress' or development in urban environments.

You will learn how many of these homes don't have to be destroyed, but can be moved instead.

This event makes a case for "House Rescue" through structural moving, and shows how the practice ranks extremely high on the scale of "environmental full-cost accounting" when considering the re-use or repurposing of moved houses. C & D (construction & demolition) debris accounts for between 40-60% of landfill use in times of high construction activity. Moving an average 1600 sq/ft Bungalow, for example, represents up to 60 trees-worth of lumber being kept from our landfills. We will examine the carbon footprint of a demolished home, and outline the advantages of moving threatened houses to new locations whenever possible. You will learn what house moving can give us in terms of environmental waste reduction, as well as the benefits of the historic preservation of the urban architecture of our residential neighborhoods.

In fact, "rescuing" a single home in your lifetime represents 125 years of your share of recycling paper!
