37 Ramps to Be Built in One Day in the Largest Rampathon Ever

Seattle—May 21, 2016—On May 21, the lives of 37 families will change just a little bit, thanks to local builders volunteering their time to build ramps for Rampathon in King and Snohomish counties. Many families with disabilities have difficulties getting in and out of their homes. The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties, along with its members, want to make the lives of families facing disabilities a little easier.

Recipients of a few of those ramps include 6-year-old Colby, a tiny house village serving homeless individuals and families, and a WWII veteran. This year, 37 ramps will be built during Rampathon. In the 23 years of the event, this is the largest Rampathon ever. Since its inception in 1993, more than 370 ramps have been built with $1.7 million in in-kind donations.

Colby

Colby was a typical nine-month-old when his mother received a phone call that changed their lives. Colby is a victim of abusive head trauma. He was assaulted by his babysitter, who couldn't deal with his crying. The result was a traumatic brain injury that left him in a lifelong non-ambulatory state. He is now a permanent wheelchair user. His family is devoting themselves to educating care givers and new parents on the effects of frustrated behaviors and development of understanding that babies cry for many reasons and sometimes for no reason we can understand or fix.

Colby is now 6 years old; Rampathon happens the day after the sixth anniversary of this tragedy. Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau will be building Colby's ramp.

Nickelsville Tiny Home Village

Sawhorse Revolution worked with a coalition of organizations to create Seattle's first tiny house village. It' is designed to provide a safe space and transitional services to those experiencing homelessness. Opened in January 2016, it featured plumbed bathroom facilities. Now, they're building a ramp to provide access to bathroom and shower facilities for those individuals who struggle with homelessness and disabilities.

Sawhorse Revolution works with high school students of diverse backgrounds from Seattle and surrounding areas. Under the tutelage of mentors, professional builders, architects, and cross-disciplinary educators, they offer students a widely applicable skill set, opportunities for character development, and confidence in their abilities to engage and improve their communities.

WWII Veteran Hideyoshi Horikawa

95-year-old Hideyoshi has been in a care facility four times due to complications from falls. He has hemiparesis (weakness or inability to move) in his upper and lower extremities. His left calf muscle is weak due to a WWII gunshot wound from his time in the U.S. Army during the European campaign. He has reduced sensation in his feet due to frostbite he received during the war. He currently has to use Tri-Med services to enter and exit his home. His wife is his primary care giver.

Carlisle Classic Homes will be building Hideyoshi's ramp.

2020 Winners Announced for the REX/T-REX (Remodeling Excellence and Trades Remodeling Excellence) Awards

The virtual celebration highlighted the best remodelers in the Puget Sound region.

BELLEVUE, Wash.—August 17, 2020—The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS) hosted their Remodeling/Trades Remodeling Excellence (REX/T-REX) Awards virtually this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The REX/T-REX Awards are presented by the Remodelers Council of MBAKS, the oldest Remodelers Council in the nation. Local remodelers and builders submitted their best projects of the year. They watched the ceremony at small viewing parties in compliance with Washington state’s Phase 2 guidelines and accepted their awards over camera.

REX/T-REX entries were judged on the following categories:

1. Aesthetics—How is the remodel visually appealing?
2. Special or unique design solutions—How was the space planned and was livability considered?
3. Quality workmanship—What are the special features of the project and is there attention to detail?
4. Use of appropriate building material—Does the remodel complement existing structure and design?
5. Budgetary consideration—How did the project keep within the budget and still deliver client expectations?
6. Challenges and obstacles—Were there any unexpected obstacles that called for adjustments?

MBAKS Inducts Cameron McKinnon as 2022 Board President

BELLEVUE, Wash., Feb. 3, 2022—The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS) inducted Cameron McKinnon as its 2022 President of the Board of Directors during the annual holiday gala in December 2021.

Born and raised in Everett, Washington, Cameron has over 15 years of experience working in the development and construction industry. After graduating from the University of Denver with degrees in Finance and Accounting. Cameron joined Gamut360 Holdings, LLC to launch and oversee the company’s new division in Seattle which focused on infill residential development of single-family homes and townhomes.

Cameron joined MBAKS in 2013 and has been an active member within the Seattle Builders Council since that time. In 2018, he joined the Board of Directors and within 6 months was elected the 2nd Vice President. As one of the youngest Board Presidents in the history of the organization, Cameron is embracing tomorrow and focusing on growing a younger membership base. He also will work to expand MBAKS’ advocacy work within the housing industry.

“As we look ahead, we are beginning to see a shift in our region’s mindset around what housing and density should look like,” says Cameron. “It is the responsibility of MBAKS to help guide our jurisdictions towards responsible growth to allow for more housing options for all.”

In addition to his role as Partner and the Director of Acquisitions and Development at Gamut360, Cameron recently co-founded Confluence Development, LLC, a Seattle-based residential real estate development firm that focuses on infill developments of townhomes and single-family homes in the Greater Seattle area.

The newly inducted 2022 Board of Directors is rounded out with First Vice President Traci Tenhulzen (Tenhulzen Residential), Second Vice President Trevor Johnson (Blackwood Builders Group), Secretary Cameron Kartak (AAA Kartak Glass & Closet), and Immediate Past President Todd Levitt (Murray Franklyn A Family of Companies).
