Established in 1982, CrystaLite is a Northwest manufacturer of high-quality skylights, roof glazing, sun rooms, and railing systems for residential, commercial, and industrial markets. Based in Everett, Washington, CrystaLite has additional distribution and sales locations in Spokane and Salem, Oregon, and employs 60 total employees. Materials are sourced in America and all products are manufactured in the Pacific Northwest. The company sells its products across the United States.

Lots of Hats

Cathy Hieb is Controller and Secretary/Treasurer of CrystaLite, but assumes other roles. "My background is in finance. I started 13 years ago as the company Controller and have just recently assumed the corporate responsibility as Secretary/Treasurer. I handle the company finances, like quarterly/monthly reporting, financial statements, payroll, AR, and AP. But I wear a lot of other hats. I'm also personal secretary to the President and Vice President."

Big Cost Savings From the MBA Trust

CrystaLite has been a member of the MBA Health Trust for 12 years. "Cost savings is the big advantage to being in the Trust," Cathy says. "These days, keeping health insurance costs down but still providing employees what they need is a challenge. We pay 100 percent of our employees' premiums and that's something we want to continue to do if it's affordable."

Significant Savings Compared to Other Plans

Cathy says CrystaLite goes out for bid every year for health insurance but always finds the best options with the MBA. "We've even had other insurance companies approach us for our business and then tell us that the MBA Health Trust is way better, the savings are so significant, that we should just stay with them. Only once did we go to another plan, but then we came back to the Trust."

The MBA Trust Gives Crystalite Plan Flexibility

CrystaLite employees have the choice between two plan options, depending on their personal needs and circumstances. "About seven years ago, the high-deductible HSA program came on the scene and we were the first company to jump on board," Cathy relates. "We offer our employees two programs: a traditional plan for those who use more doctor visits and the high-deductible health-savings account for those who just want to make sure they have catastrophic coverage. Now we have 90 percent on the HSA program. You can still see any doctor you want and all the major hospitals in Seattle are covered. The HSA plan is affordable for us but still offers major benefits for our employees when they really need it."

Strong Broker Relationship

"Our administrator is EPK," says Cathy. "They're very good. They know our company very well and what our goals are. If I have a question, they are giving me answers right on the first phone call. Adding or terminating employees is accomplished pretty much the same day. They are really good at that."

Master Builders Association President Aims to Continue Association's Legacy as Trusted Source for Homebuilders

“I am thrilled and honored to be serving as President of the Board of Directors,” said Tenhulzen. “After 25 years of being a member, I continue to be inspired by people around me who selflessly give their time to help continue the success of the association.”

With a degree in Exercise Physiology and Business focused on Ergonomics from Washington State University and a Master’s in Human Resources from Southern New Hampshire University, Tenhulzen began her career in Corporate Wellness. Tenhulzen then transitioned into the homebuilding industry when she started her own safety and consulting company, Safety Resource Management and Consulting. She sold her company and joined Tenhulzen Residential seven years later and now serves as the Executive Producer where she oversees the business operations, which includes Human Resources, Sales, and Safety Management.

“Our goal is to build homes, not barriers,” stated Tenhulzen. “The advocacy work that the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties does will help generations to come set down roots in the wonderful region we call home.”

Tenhulzen is an active member of the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club and enjoys watching her son Matthew play football. In their spare time the Tenhulzen family enjoy hiking, skiing, cooking and going on long walks with Isabelle, their black lab.

Revisions to the list of acceptable documents

The Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240) has been added to List C. If you’re filling out the Form I-9 online, you will be able to select this form from the dropdown menus. Using e-verify? You can also select Form FS-240 when creating a case for an employee who presents this document for Form I-9.

All the certifications of report of birth issued by the Department of State (Form FS-545, Form DS-1350, and Form FS-240) have been combined into selection C #2 in List C. 

All List C documents except the Social Security card have been renumbered. Example: The employment authorization document issued by the Department of Homeland Security on List C has changed from List C #8 to List C #7.

What to do

Employers can continue using the older version through Sept. 17. On Sept. 18, you must use the revised version. You’ll notice the revision date of 07/17/17 N at the bottom of the form. Storage and retention rules for any previously completed Forms I-9 remain the same. Find more details on that here.

Penalties for noncompliance

Just last year, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) nearly doubled fines for violations with Forms I-9.

There is a $216–$2,126 fine per Form I-9 paperwork violation. That’s an increase from $110–$1,100.

For unlawful employment of unauthorized workers, the fine for the first offense increased to $539–$4,313 per worker from $375–$3,200.

For unfair immigration-related practices, specifically document abuse, the fine per individual increased to $110-$1,110. Learn more about the fines and penalties.
